Moving can be really stressful, whether you’re relocating around the corner or across the country. Between packing, managing tons of utilities, subscriptions and providers, supervising movers, and unpacking, it’s enough to make anyone feel a bit out of sorts. This goes for our pets, too. As creatures of habit, dogs may become stressed out or fearful from the chaos of moving, but there are steps you can take to help the process run more smoothly for everyone.
Early in the moving process, it’s a good idea to pack your dog’s essential items and at least two weeks of supplies – such as food, medication, treats, and hygiene items – and set them aside. That way you won’t have to dig through boxes that are already packed to find something your dog really needs or wants. Also, if your dog isn’t a regular crate-user, it’s a good idea to reacquaint him with his crate so that you’ll have a safe place for the most chaotic times during the coming weeks.
Prior to moving day, meet with your vet to discuss anxiety or motion sickness medication to have on hand, any necessary vaccines, and all the updated paperwork you might need for traveling and getting established in your new home. If you’re moving out of town, ask your vet if they know of any trusted practices in your new area. Finally, make sure your dog’s microchip information is current in case something goes terribly wrong and he runs off.
If you’re moving close by, go visit several times to walk through the neighborhood and get comfortable with the sights and smells of the area. Having a sense of familiarity will help your dog feel more relaxed once you move in.
If you’re moving away from the Baton Rouge area, please call us and we will be happy to assist. If you are new to the area, please give us a call and we would love to schedule an appointment to meet your pet at Purple Paws Pet Clinic
The more you can keep a consistent routine for your dog, including feeding times, walks, and potty breaks, the easier the moving process will be on both of you. Even when everything else is topsy turvy, knowing that you’re together and some things haven’t changed will help you both feel calmer and more secure. Once you get settled in your new home, we hope you both will enjoy making some new friends and lasting memories.
